“Necessity if the mother of all inventions” –English proverb.
A few of us got together in hopes of learning and teaching different camping and homesteading skills to each other. The COVID pandemic hit at approximately the same time. What we were seeing in our area and the world around us is that no one was ready. The skills that some of us have far surpasses what others have. Schools and communities have tossed out the basic skills of cooking, agriculture, and sewing and replaced it with more math, science, and computer skills. We have young people and a few generations that have no clue how to grow food, cook, or repair anything. And with restaurants closing and very few funds available, our supplies have been depleted.
We live in an area that is prone to hurricanes and floods. Yet we are not prepared. And we should be. Schools have closed and reopened, to only have been closed and reopened again. Virtual learning works for some people but not for all. Parents have no skills to pass on to their children as they have not been given the opportunity to learn them either. Grandparents have this knowledge, but they are isolated because of the virus. And when living in an urban area, these issues become bigger, as there are more mouths to feed.
Knowledge is the key to survival. So, we set out to spread the knowledge to all those interested. We are purely a civic minded group to spread the knowledge to all walks of life on how to become more self sufficient at home, how to feed your families as cheaply as possible, and how to live, learn, and grow in a crisis. The money we raise in this endeavor simply pays for supplies. We are working toward a non-profit status, as we are staffed by volunteers.
